Data. Knowledge. Action: these three words symbolize steps in the data science value chain.

The UBC Master of Data Science curriculum covers all stages of this chain, providing you with skills to focus on the “knowledge” section. Over 10 months, you will learn how to extract data for use in experiments, how to apply state-of-the-art techniques in data analysis and how to present extracted knowledge effectively to domain experts.

Data science can open your mind—and career path—to infinite possibilities. There is a growing need in many fields for people who can apply computational and statistical techniques to data and then effectively communicate results from analyses to various stakeholders.

The new UBC Master of Data Science is a professional program developed by the combined expertise of the UBC departments of Computer Science and Statistics to help meet this need and give students a fast track to a great career.

Utilizing descriptive and prescriptive techniques, students extract and analyze data from both unstructured and structured forms and then communicate the findings of those analyses in ways to enable organizations to make informed decisions based on data.

The Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a problem-focused and curiosity-driven interdisciplinary research institute and graduate program, with interest and expertise in a wide range of topics under the realm of environment and sustainability. Our mission is to foster sustainable futures through integrated research and learning about the linkages among human and natural systems, and to support decision making from local to global scales. More often than not, we achieve this through collaborations across students and faculty in a manner that recognizes our collective skills, intellectual histories and methodological approaches, and yet encourages our interdependencies as we consider real world problems.

The Resources, Environment and Sustainability (RES) graduate program provides a home for such interdisciplinary students, focusing on the integration of the biophysical (ecological), socio-economic, and political realities of resources within the context of a sustainable, healthy environment.

The MPT/PhD program provides a new option for outstanding students with an interest in both clinical and research training relevant to physical therapy. The MPT/PhD program is designed to provide students flexibility in the completion of their concurrent clinical and research training, and to integrate their clinical and research learning, resulting in an accelerated completion time (approximately 5 years).

Students may choose from two options to complete the MPT/PhD program based on discussion with their research supervisor. Given the emphasis on clinical research in the program, though students may enter the MPT program initially, they will be expected to maintain progress towards their PhD requirements from the outset. Similarly, if students choose to enter the MPT program in Year 3, they would still be expected to maintain PhD progress for the final three years of the Dual Degree program.

Experimental Pathology refers to research in any area of biomedical investigation that is relevant to human disease. Since it is necessary to understand the normal working of the system to fully define the changes associated with disease, the areas represented at UBC cover a wide range of fields and approaches. Work at all levels of biological organization is involved, from protein to lipoprotein biochemistry and molecular biology through cell and tumour biology, animal models for studies on pulmonary and cardiovascular pathophysiology and viral and bacterial infection processes, to clinical studies on human population and the AIDS epidemic. Projects suitable for graduate research are active in all these areas; current research funding awarded to faculty within the Department of Pathology exceeds $6 million annually. - Faculty of Medicine - Coursework + Thesis required - possible program start dates in January, May, September - further information at http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs/master-of-science-pathology-laboratory-medicine

The graduate program in Pharmacology was established in 1951, and currently includes programs in cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, viral pharmacology, free radical biology, and drug development. Additional training programs exist in therapeutics, evidence-based medicine, and clinical investigation. The pharmacology graduate program has strengths in basic science as well as translational research. The graduate program in Pharmacology is a component of the newly formed Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and formalizes the Department's historical research and academic interactions. Within this new structure, additional research programs reflecting the close association between the disciplines of anesthesiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics are now available. Courses in pharmacology are taught at the undergraduate science, medical, dental, and graduate levels. The program adheres to an 'apprenticeship' model of graduate training, in which graduate students work in close collaboration with a faculty member who is also their graduate supervisor. The program has strengths in projects covering a wide range of scientific and clinical areas of investigation. The primary aim of our graduate training program is to provide students with the skills necessary to conduct research in pharmacology and therapeutics that can be published in first-rate journals. Thus, an important factor in an applicant's admissibility is a matching of research and professional interests of the student and a faculty member within the program. The Department has facilities available for original investigations in cellular, biochemical, viral, autonomic, cardiovascular, clinical, and neuropharmacology. - Faculty of Medicine - Coursework + Thesis required - possible program start dates in January, July, May, September - further information at http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs/master-of-science-pharmacology

The Food and Resource Economics (FRE) Group offers both a research master's degree, the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Agricultural Economics, and a professional master's degree, the Master of Food and Resource Economics (M.F.R.E.). The M.Sc. is designed for careers where research is a main component, while the M.F.R.E. is designed for careers in industry or government. In both degrees, coursework provides students with rigorous training in applied economics and quantitative methods. In the M.Sc., students develop specialized research skills by working with faculty throughout UBC on important real-world issues. In the M.F.R.E., students combine applied economics with policy analysis and agribusiness management, enabling them to analyze issues in the food and resource sectors. FRE faculty members have direct experience working in the food and resource sectors, both domestically and internationally in Europe and Asia, particularly with developing countries. The M.F.R.E. program requires 30 credits of course work over 12 months of intensive study, beginning in September. In Winter Session, students complete 18 credits of required graduate courses and 6 credits of restricted electives - Faculty of Land and Food Systems - Coursework only - possible program start dates in September - further information at https://mfre.landfood.ubc.ca/

The M.P.H. Program is a two-year non-thesis program. It will normally be completed in three academic terms and one term devoted to a practicum. The M.P.H. program is available in two formats:

  • Traditional classroom-based curriculum: on-campus classes scheduled on a Monday to Friday timetable.
  • Distributed learning format: each course consists of three full days, one day per month. An additional 15 hours of curriculum is online for each course. Full day classes will be scheduled Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Courses will be scheduled so that classes for four separate courses can take place over three extended weekends (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday) in a term.

The MPH can be combined with the Master of Science in Nursing or the Diploma in Dental Public Health.

The field of planning practice (encompassing urban, community and regional planning, and related sub-specializations) has long been recognized as a professional field in Canada, as elsewhere in the world. Founded by Dr. H.P. Oberlander in 1951, the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) is one of the oldest planning schools in Canada. Its Vision is “Sustainability through the Democratization of Planning,” and in achieving that Vision, SCARP's Mission is “to advance the transition to sustainability through excellence in integrated policy and planning research, professional education and community service.” The objective of SCARP’s new Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) program is to further the Vision and Mission of the School by providing students, through cutting-edge content and innovative pedagogy, with the essential theory, skills, methods, and critical thinking and analytical tools they need to address the complex social and environmental issues of a rapidly urbanizing world. It is intensive and professionally oriented, and students emerge as well-rounded, critical, and creative agents of change.

The Resources, Environment and Sustainability (RES) graduate program provides a home for interdisciplinary students focusing on the integration of the biophysical (ecological), socio-economic, and political realities of resource management within the context of a sustainable, healthy environment.

This online two-year, 30 credit specialized program is designed to prepare surgical care professionals from many disciplines to address surgical challenges and contribute to finding solutions in low resource settings globally. The program provides a strong foundation for present and future global surgical care professionals by developing knowledge and skills in the interpretation and use of published experience and research, balanced with applied learning in low resource settings. Students will spend four to eight weeks in an underserved location globally, producing practical “on-the-ground” skills. The location of the placement is determined by the student in consultation with a program advisor. A blended model of practicum based learning and on-line teaching methods facilitate the participation of candidates from across Canada and around the world.
