The MPT/PhD program provides a new option for outstanding students with an interest in both clinical and research training relevant to physical therapy. The MPT/PhD program is designed to provide students flexibility in the completion of their concurrent clinical and research training, and to integrate their clinical and research learning, resulting in an accelerated completion time (approximately 5 years).

Students may choose from two options to complete the MPT/PhD program based on discussion with their research supervisor. Given the emphasis on clinical research in the program, though students may enter the MPT program initially, they will be expected to maintain progress towards their PhD requirements from the outset. Similarly, if students choose to enter the MPT program in Year 3, they would still be expected to maintain PhD progress for the final three years of the Dual Degree program.

The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS) is home to a community of researchers actively engaged in the investigation of questions of vital importance to society in the age of information. At the broadest level, we are concerned with the recorded artifacts of human experience: their creation, collection, organization, preservation, and use. Increasingly, these artifacts - books, documents, images, data, etc.- are created and/or preserved in digital formats that can be widely disseminated and used. Our collective work aims to ensure that this legacy of human experience, housed in both traditional and newer digital forms, is preserved, shared and explored, so that individuals and communities can continue to draw upon it to deepen their understanding of themselves and their communities and make new discoveries about our world. While our overarching research agenda is broad, research at SLAIS is clustered around three core areas of inquiry: Management and preservation of digital recordsCreation and use of cultural materialsDigital information systems and information interaction - School of Library, Archival and Information Studies - Faculty of Arts - Doctoral study - possible program start dates in September - further information at http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs/phd-library-archival-information-studies

The Program will be full-time, consisting of courses and research, designed to train marine and freshwater scientists in basic and applied research that will help foster healthy marine and freshwater ecosystems and sustainable resource use. The Program draws on the broad and extensive expertise of faculty associated with the Institute and responds to the emerging need for expertise to manage fisheries and other resource use activities on Canada’s coastlines, marine territory and inland waterbodies. Ph.D. candidates will deepen their interdisciplinary expertise and acquire professional experience in areas including fisheries science, aquatic ecology, environmental physiology, natural resource economics, marine governance, and climate change. In the process, the program will foster cutting- edge research on marine and freshwater systems, and address national and global priorities in environmental science and technologies, and natural resources and energy. Why should you consider this program at UBC? Faculty members hold joint appointments with Zoology, Anthropology, Geography, History, Statistics, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, the UBC Policy School, and Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. This integration of natural and applied management and sustainability graduate training streams differentiates the program from all other related programs in the province and is a key strength of the program. The Program builds on a proven record of accomplishment where the core faculty of the former UBC Fisheries Centre has supervised several hundred graduate students through Zoology and Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (RES) graduate programs. This program will bring together components of the natural science-type graduate programs (i.e., the Zoology Graduate Program and Oceanography Graduate Program) with the applied management and sustainability-type programs (i.e., Resources and Environmental Sustainability Graduate Program) and build on their collective strengths. Career Options The Program will produce research scientists with the research capacity and knowledge translation skills necessary for influential careers in academia, industry, government, and consulting. Ph.D. candidates will gain exposure to potential future careers and develop professional connections through cooperation and interaction with a diverse partner group in industry (e.g., United Fisherman and Allied Workers Union), consulting (e.g., LGL limited), government (e.g., Fisheries and Oceans Canada, B.C. Ministry of the Environment), and non-governmental organizations (e.g., Suzuki Foundation, Hakai Institute). Experimental Pathology refers to research in any area of biomedical investigation that is relevant to human disease. Since it is necessary to understand the normal working of the system to fully define the changes associated with disease, the areas represented at UBC cover a wide range of fields and approaches. Work at all levels of biological organization is involved, from protein to lipoprotein biochemistry and molecular biology through cell and tumour biology, animal models for studies on pulmonary and cardiovascular pathophysiology and viral and bacterial infection processes, to clinical studies on human population and the AIDS epidemic. Projects suitable for graduate research are active in all these areas; current research funding awarded to faculty within the Department of Pathology exceeds $6 million annually. - Faculty of Medicine - Doctoral study - possible program start dates in January, May, September - further information at http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs/phd-pathology-laboratory-medicine

The graduate program in Pharmacology was established in 1951, and currently includes programs in cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, viral pharmacology, free radical biology, and drug development. Additional training programs exist in therapeutics, evidence-based medicine, and clinical investigation. The pharmacology graduate program has strengths in basic science as well as translational research. The graduate program in Pharmacology is a component of the newly formed Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and formalizes the Department's historical research and academic interactions. Within this new structure, additional research programs reflecting the close association between the disciplines of anesthesiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics are now available. Courses in pharmacology are taught at the undergraduate science, medical, dental, and graduate levels. The program adheres to an 'apprenticeship' model of graduate training, in which graduate students work in close collaboration with a faculty member who is also their graduate supervisor. The program has strengths in projects covering a wide range of scientific and clinical areas of investigation. The primary aim of our graduate training program is to provide students with the skills necessary to conduct research in pharmacology and therapeutics that can be published in first-rate journals. Thus, an important factor in an applicant's admissibility is a matching of research and professional interests of the student and a faculty member within the program. The Department has facilities available for original investigations in cellular, biochemical, viral, autonomic, cardiovascular, clinical, and neuropharmacology. - Faculty of Medicine - Doctoral study - possible program start dates in January, July, May, September - further information at http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs/phd-pharmacology

Medical physicists are health care professionals with specialized training in the medical applications of physics. Their work often involves the use of x-rays and accelerated charged particles, radioactive substances, ultrasound, magnetic and electric fields, infra-red and ultraviolet light, heat and lasers in diagnosis and therapy. Most medical physicists work in hospital diagnostic imaging departments, cancer treatment facilities, or hospital-based research establishments. Others work in universities, government, and industry. Graduates of the Ph.D. in Medical Physics program will: understand the physics of medical imaging and radiation oncology; achieve independence in original medical physics research; work effectively in clinical and research environments that include oncologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, cardiologists, neuroscientists, radiation therapy professionals and biomedical engineers; be prepared for positions at medical physics research institutions as well as healthcare institutions. Career Options Graduates will be equipped to pursue careers in hospitals, specialized areas of medicine (e.g. cancer treatment and research and brain research), government, industry and other medical research environments. Their work is interdisciplinary in nature and in many cases, translates to innovative solutions to real world medical problems relating to diagnosis and treatment of many disease types from cancer to brain and cardiac research. Many of our medical physics faculty hold associate or adjunct professor status in the Department of Physics and Astronomy but have primary appointments in Departments of the Faculty of Medicine (Radiology, Surgery, Oncology) or work at the BC Cancer Agency Treatment or Research Centres. In BC alone, population growth and replacement of retirements requires about 5 new radiotherapy physicists each year. Growing demand for advanced medical imaging (CT, MRI, PET) creates a similar requirement for imaging physicists.
