Statistics is the science of designing informative experiments, of displaying and analyzing data and of drawing valid conclusions from data. Knowledge of statistical methods is useful to scientists, engineers and workers in all areas of government, research, industry and medicine, but can also be studied as a subject in its own right. There is currently great demand for those who understand and can apply statistics effectively. Students are guided by experts in many branches of mathematics as they explore some of the great masterpieces of human thought. Over the years our programs have prepared students with a variety of goals, perspectives and tastes: for graduate study in mathematics and other disciplines, for teaching, for professional education and for entry into jobs where technical expertise and problem-solving skills are valued.
