The Life Sciences program provides students, through a multi-disciplinary approach, the opportunity to study the basic medical sciences. Interdisciplinary courses are offered in the third and fourth year following fundamental courses in biology, mathematics, physics and chemistry in the first year of specialized basic science discipline courses in the second and third year. During the final years of the honours degree, students may concentrate their studies in one of the basic sciences or specialize in an interdisciplinary theme such as neuroscience, cardiovascular science, reproductive biology or molecular biology. The Queen's Life Sciences program is unmatched in preparation for graduate studies in biomedical sciences as well as for opportunities in the marketplace, especially in the pharmaceutical industry.

Humans and other animals have more in common than you might think. From neurological systems to patterns of behaviour, this four year program fuses core elements from Biology and Psychology and allows considerable opportunity for upper-year specialization and independent study. With an emphasis on cross-disciplinary interaction and integration, the “BioPsych” program explores both commonalities and uniquely human features of brain, behaviour and cognition.

Understanding the evolution of drug resistant diseases draws upon knowledge of genetics, genomics, epidemiology and population ecology. These are all areas of study steeped in both Biology and Mathematics, and this example is just one of many that could be used to highlight the growing need for quantitative literacy in academics, medicine, and industry. The Biology and Mathematics program incorporates courses from both departments and combines them with specialized courses in “BioMath” to provide an exceptional learning experience in this emerging field.
